Workforce Supply & Challenges

We have a little more than 900000 practicing drs in the country that are directly providing patient care. Nearly 1.150 million drs in total.
We produce nearly 25000 drs a year and around 185000 nurses a year.
A substantial % of drs go part time by 40. A significant % gives up clinical medicine by 40. This amplifies the challenge of the ratio of Dr hours to our population of 345 million.
There are areas of the country where it is nearly impossible to find a dr or specialist. In many areas you can’t find primary care without concierge or you can wait a year for an appointment. In other areas the ratio of specialists to population is awful.
Nurse development has accelerated. Dr development has stalled. Ie the number being produced each year.
We need more brilliant and energetic and curious and compassionate and problem solving Dr leaders at many levels.
Drs, hospitals and nurses remain the backbone of our system and our safety net.
AI and technology and prevention help but we need more drs and nurses too. And we need the best and brightest. Technology and pharma are very important but not a panacea. 2x vs 10x solutions.
To bend the cost curve, we will need to greatly simplify the administrative and payment system and push a lot of care delivery to PAs and tech.
